Swimming in Andros
Andros is the northernmost major Cycladic island, green and mountainous with a coastline that alternates between dramatic cliffs and gentle sandy bays. Its position at the top of the island chain means it intercepts the Meltemi before other islands, resulting in strong winds on exposed coasts.
The island's east coast takes the brunt of the weather, while western and southern beaches benefit from the mountainous interior as a windbreak. Andros is larger than most Cycladic islands, so conditions can vary significantly from one beach to another on the same day.
Swimming is best from June to September. Andros suits hikers and nature lovers who also want beach time — the island's trail network connects many of its beaches, and the journey is as rewarding as the destination.
