Swimming in Mykonos
Mykonos sits in the heart of the Cyclades, its southern coastline carved into a series of sheltered bays that have made it one of Greece's most beloved beach destinations. The island's geography is a swimmer's friend: while the north coast takes the full brunt of the Meltemi, the south-facing beaches of Ornos, Platis Gialos, and Psarou tuck neatly behind the island's rocky spine.
The Meltemi winds blow strongest here from mid-June through September, funnelling between Tinos and Mykonos with real force. On exposed beaches like Paradise, the wind can make swimming uncomfortable or even unsafe. But walk ten minutes to a south-facing bay and you'll find waters so calm they feel like a different sea entirely.
Swimming season runs from late May to mid-October, with July and August being warmest but also windiest. For the best combination of warm water and manageable winds, aim for June or September.
