Swimming in Syros
Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades, known more for its neoclassical architecture than its beaches — but its west coast hides excellent swimming spots. Galissas, the island's most popular beach, sits in a deep bay facing west, completely shielded from the north Meltemi winds.
While the Cyclades are synonymous with Meltemi exposure, Syros benefits from its position slightly west of the main wind channel. The west-coast beaches enjoy reliable protection, and even the more exposed spots tend to be calmer than their equivalents on nearby islands.
Swimming is best from June to September. Syros is a good choice for swimmers who want a quieter, more authentic Cycladic experience without sacrificing beach quality — Galissas consistently rates among the best-protected beaches in the island group.
