Swimming in Symi

Symi is a small, harbour-perfect island just north of Rhodes, famous for its neoclassical mansions cascading down to the waterfront. Its coastline is rocky and indented, with swimming spots that tend to be small coves rather than long sandy stretches.

The island's position near the Turkish coast shelters it from the worst of the Meltemi. Symi's beaches benefit from the island's deeply carved inlets, which create natural wind barriers. With 5 beaches tracked, each offering a different character, there's good variety for a small island.

Swimming is best from May to October. Symi is a day-trip favourite from Rhodes, but staying overnight reveals a quieter island with excellent swimming in uncrowded coves — especially in the early morning before the ferries arrive.

Swimming season: May to October
