Swimming in Lemnos
Lemnos sits in the northern Aegean between the Greek mainland and Turkey, a flat, windswept island with long sandy beaches and a military heritage. Its lack of mountains means less natural wind protection, but the island's extensive coastline ensures you can always find a sheltered spot.
Wind is a constant companion on Lemnos — the island is famous for strong breezes that make it a kitesurfing hotspot. For swimmers, the trick is choosing the right coast for the day's wind direction. The south and west coasts tend to be calmest during typical Meltemi conditions.
Swimming season runs from June to September. Lemnos offers vast, empty beaches that would be packed on any Cycladic island — here, you'll often have kilometres of sand to yourself. The water is cooler than the south Aegean but refreshingly clean.
